SIGMUND FREUD
INFANTILE SEXUALITY
INFANTILE SEXUALITY
There was a Philosopher who known as “the father of psychoanalysis” He is Sigmund Freud a medical doctor so he decides to make a philosophy about infantile Sexuality that he describes the five stage of the child who involved in that. He also knew as one of the 20th century's most influential thinkers. He has many work but I discuss the Infantile Sexuality.
Sigmund Freud was born the Austrian town of Freiberg on May 6, 1856. Since he was a Medical doctor he studies the infantile sexuality because of his patient that suffer from hysteria. He articulated and refined the concepts of the unconscious, infantile sexuality and repression, and he proposed a tripartite account of the mind’s structure all as part of a radically new conceptual and therapeutic frame of reference for the understanding of human psychological development and the treatment of abnormal mental conditions. He received his medical degree in 1881 and has become engaged to be married in 1882. After a life of remarkable vigor and creative productivity, he died of cancer while exiled in England in 1939.
For Freud Infantile sexuality is if this had its origins in, and was a generalization of, Breuer’s earlier discovery that traumatic childhood events could have devastating negative effects upon the adult individual, and took the form of the general thesis that early childhood sexual experiences were the crucial factors in the determination of the adult personality. It means if someone experience a sex earlier then it will affect to his/her childhood events maybe they will always look for a sex in a younger age because they experience it earlier but if she got a pregnant maybe her baby can affect because she is not ready for that in a younger age. Freud accordingly terms this the "oral" stage of development. This is followed by a stage in which the locus of pleasure or energy release is the anus, particularly in the act of defecation, and this is accordingly termed the ‘anal’ stage. Then the young child develops an interest in its sexual organs as a site of pleasure (the "phallic" stage), and develops a deep sexual attraction for the parent of the opposite sex, and a hatred of the parent of the same sex (the "Oedipus complex"). According to him there are five (5) psychosexual stages, first is the Oral Stage (Birth to 18 months). In Oral stage the child focused on talking or oral pleasure a little or too much gratification can result in an Oral Fixation or Oral Personality which is evidenced by a preoccupation with oral activities. This type of personality may have a stronger tendency to smoke, drink alcohol, over eat, or bite his or her nails. The second stage is the Anal Stage (18 months to three years). In this age the focus of this stage is the happiness of the child that can eliminate or retaining the faeces that they get through society pressure. But because of their parents the child need to learn to control anal stimulation that terms of personality after effects of anal fixation during this stage can result in an obsession with cleanliness, perfection and control but the opposite of this is they become messy and disorganized. The third stage is the Phallic Stage (ages three to six). In this stage the pleasure zone switches to the genitals, Freud believe that during this stage the boy develop his unconscious sexual desire for his mother that because of this they have a competition between his father. In this group of feeling it is also known as Oedipus Complex where the child accidentally killed his father then he was married to his mother. The next stage is the Latency Stage (age six to puberty) During this age the sexual remains repressed and the child still interact and play mostly with same sex peers. The last stage is the Genital Stage (puberty on). This is the final stage where the psychosexual development begins at the start of puberty when sexual urges are once again awakened.
In the whole of stage Freud believed, is the sequence or progression implicit in normal human development, and it is to be observed that at the infant level the instinctual attempts to satisfy the pleasure drive are frequently checked by parental control and social coercion. The developmental process, then, is for the child essentially a movement through a series of conflicts, the successful resolution of which is crucial to adult mental health. Play away from home it is a best example of idioms that means to have sex with someone who is not your usual partner. You will be unfaithful because whoever you want to have a sex you do even you didn’t usual partner. For example she stuck on her decision to divorce because she discovered her husband playing away from home. It means she stuck to the decision to divorce with his partner because she discovered that her husband is unfaithful to her.
For me based on what I learn Sigmund Freud want us to be aware of that because he believe that during we grow up there will a consequences to develop our body and he explain the five stage that will help us to know what he really want to us. I think his work is still exists because while I reading I realize the stage of the child and how will affect to the child the experience he experience. He also give an example to get what his point is. I learn a lot of his philosophy because I get what his point and since he was a medical doctor so he know the best for us. Infantile Sexuality have stages according on what I learn and in every stages have their own development it means the stages that he said is all about human development.
